vdB 142 is a small dark nebula, visible in the constellation of Cepheus.

It is located towards the central area of the great nebula complex known as IC 1396, a few arc minutes west of the open cluster associated with the nebula; despite its small size, it stands out quite easily, due to its deep darkness and its shape, which gave it the nickname of Elephant's Proboscis. Being in very northern declinations, it is circumpolar from most of the northern hemisphere; all around it appears surrounded by a relatively rich starfield, and the presence of the diffuse nebulosity of IC 1396 further highlights its nature as a dark nebula.

vdB 142 è una piccola nebulosa oscura, visibile nella costellazione di Cefeo.

Si trova verso l'area centrale del grande complesso nebulare noto come IC 1396, a pochi minuti d'arco a ovest dell'ammasso aperto associato alla nebulosa; nonostante le sue piccole dimensioni, si distingue piuttosto facilmente, grazie alla sua profonda oscurità e alla sua forma, che le è valsa il soprannome di Proboscide dell'Elefante. Trovandosi a declinazioni molto settentrionali, è circumpolare per la maggior parte dell'emisfero boreale; tutt'intorno appare circondata da un campo stellare relativamente ricco, e la presenza della nebulosità diffusa di IC 1396 ne evidenzia ulteriormente la natura di nebulosa oscura.
