M81 - M82 Bode & Cigar GalaxyM81 - M82 Galassie di Bode e Sigaro

M81 (Bode's Galaxy or NGC 3031) and M82 (Cigar Galaxy or NGC 3034) are two galaxies located in the constellation Ursa Major, approximately 11.7 million light-years from the solar system, among the galaxy groups closest to the Local Group.

Currently separated by approximately 300,000 light-years, the two galaxies underwent a close encounter approximately 250 million years ago, which channeled significant amounts of gas into the central regions of M82. The gravitational interaction increased star formation activity in both systems: the tidal forces exerted by M81 continue to deform M82, triggering starbursts and the formation of superstar clusters.

M81 is a bright spiral galaxy, identified in 1774 by Johann Elert Bode and added to Charles Messier's catalog in 1781. M82, also discovered by Bode in 1774, is an active system characterized by an intense magnetic field and high radio emission. Its nucleus is home to a massive outflow of material that has been active for 1.5 million years, during which gas and dust equivalent to about 5 million solar masses are expelled from the galactic center at speeds of 1,000 km/s.
