M64 Black Eye GalaxyM64 Galassia Occhio Nero
The Black Eye Galaxy (Messier 64 or M64) is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Coma Berenice, at a distance of approximately 17.3 million light-years from Earth and with a diameter of approximately 50,000 light-years.
The name derives from an extensive band of obscuring powders superimposed on the luminous nucleus. The system presents peculiar internal kinematics: the gas of the external regions rotates in the opposite direction compared to the stars and the gas of the internal disk. This counter-rotation is attributable to the merger with a satellite galaxy, which occurred over a billion years ago.
La Galassia Occhio Nero (Messier 64 o M64) è una galassia a spirale situata nella costellazione della Chioma di Berenice, a una distanza di circa 17,3 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra e con un diametro di circa 50.000 anni luce.
La denominazione deriva da un'estesa banda di polveri oscuranti sovrapposta al nucleo luminoso. Il sistema presenta una cinematica interna peculiare: il gas delle regioni esterne ruota in senso opposto rispetto alle stelle e al gas del disco interno. Tale controrotazione è attribuibile alla fusione con una galassia satellite, avvenuta oltre un miliardo di anni fa.
