M31 AndromedaM31 Andromeda

The Andromeda Galaxy is located in the constellation of the same name, approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth. In very dark conditions, it is visible to the naked eye. With a disk diameter of 220,000 light-years and approximately 1 trillion stars—a population significantly greater than that of the Milky Way—it is the closest and most extensive spiral galaxy in the Local Group.

The system is moving toward the Milky Way at a speed of approximately 400,000 km/h; the gravitational interaction between the two galaxies will alter its structure in a collision expected in approximately 5 billion years.

The identification of Cepheid variable stars in photographic plates of the object, performed by Edwin Hubble, allowed the distance to be calculated. The measurement demonstrated that the structure—historically known as the Great Andromeda Nebula—was not an internal component of the Milky Way, but rather an independent galactic system.
